So recently I was Checking out the prices for tickets to Otakon 2011 since I live a Metro ride’s distance from the Baltimore Convention Center. I the price of tickets was already biting into my personal money, but then I factored in the price of a hotel, travel expenses, food and poket money for cool stuff I might wanna get at the Con, the price became much larger that I had first percieved. With cons being out of state, and real-life to attend to like jobs and bills how do you guys save/budget you money and time for Cons? Thanks, and hope you guy have a good rest of the show!
Andrea H “I can’t just name one thing amazing about Otakon, because everything about it is awesome! You can literally do EVERYTHING here! Gaming, going to panels, dancing, concerts, and meeting your favorite voice actors are just some of the things that make you love to be there :)”

If you are reading this and did not attend Supercon this year don’t worry! We will be at Otakon in Baltimore next holding a similar contest, and we run a number of contests for the people on our site and who listen to our show.
The addicts friends and kind staff over at Florida SuperCon have been more than helpful with panels and so on and we are looking forward to being in attendance and covering the convention. We will have a table from which we may be offering special merchandise (check out what you can get at any time from our store) and running various competitions.
We had a great time last year and we hope to offer more of the same and new events!
Want to go out to dinner with the addicts? Let us know you’ll be at Supercon and that you’re interested in saying hi on our forums.
Our panels for Supercon are:
Friday | 7:00pm-8:30pm | At Anime Panels 400 | The Great Cosplay Dating Game
A quickly growing favorite among con-goers this panel puts three bachelorettes competing for one lucky bachelor and three bachelors competing for one lucky bachelorette. Come 30 minutes early to sign-up to be a part of the game. Participants must be in cosplay, must be willing to adlib and must be ready to have fun!
Saturday | 12:00pm-1:00pm | At Anime Events 100 | The Best Anime You’ve Never Seen
A standard panel revised every year with yet more anime you haven’t seen. Come, sit back, relax, and get a sampling of great anime that is sure to please even the most veteran of palates.
Saturday | 3:30pm-5:00pm | At Anime Events 100 | Traveling to Japan
Chiaki keeps going to Japan and so she keeps doing this panel. Informative, sometimes funny, and sometimes weird, this panel is a crowd pleaser for anyone who has even thought of traveling to the land of the rising sun.
Saturday | 8:00pm-9:00pm | At Anime Panels 400 | The Girl’s Guide to Con Going
What does the late time mean for this panel? That this ain’t your gramma’s guide to con-going. Slightly later means that Kimiko and Chiaki may be a little off the cuff and a little risque. Head out and be ready for something informative and fun.
Sunday | 2:00pm-3:00pm | At Anime Events MACC 1 | Anime Video Games **Debut**
We’re very excited to be debuting this panel at Florida Super Con. It will cover some of the best anime video games which we will never see here in America, focusing on region-free systems.
Metrocon held it’s successful year nine this past weekend from June 17th-18th 2011. The largest con in Florida (fluttering around 7,000 attendees, official numbers have yet to be released but if past trends hold true it should be in that ballpark) Metrocon certainly does not disappoint.
While it admittedly lacks some of the charm which smaller cons possess such as the luxury of time with guests, the ability to walk the narrow corridors without bumping into props, and not having to walk into the dealer’s room with earplugs Metrocon is the pinnacle of the biggest and the best in Florida.
Metrocon is unafraid of throwing it’s weight around when it comes to getting guests. This year there were a gauntlet of top-bill names such as voice actor Crispin Freeman and the author of Zombie survival series Max Brooks. Where some large cons rest on their laurels Metrocon keeps raising the bar for who they can get and delivers year to year.
Another area which Metrocon has put a lot of hard work and time into is their events. From contests such as the AMV Contest, the Picture This photo contest (which Kimiko won an Honorable Mention in), the singing competition known as Anime Idol (Kimiko and Chiaki won Best Technical), and of course cosplay competitions this con has no shortage of passing out prizes. The Addicts ran our own contest in which the winner will be announced on episode 89 to be aired on Sunday the 26th. But the contests are not their only events. Those things many conventions posses some variety of. Metrocon has a yearly fire show, yes we said fire, where people put on a show involving all kind of combustion and flames. The Chess Match is also a big hit, with human chess “pieces” battling it out for some kind of overall story domination.
The one event which was, in our opinions, a bit of a letdown was the Masquerade. We were sold on the promise of ballroom dancing as it was said in the program, thinking this was supported by the program we paid the $10.00 fee to get into the event. When we got there it was, unfortunately, a paid rave. There was no ballroom, or even ballroom-esque music. Other conventions which have a paid masquerade justify the cost by supplying food to guests, or offering something exclusive. Oddly, not the case here. We were told there was eventually a pretty good show, but we didn’t stick it out to see it. We wondered how Metrocon justifies charging money to see a show when they offer all other shows and their rave for free.
But, many people like the masquerade, and if that was the only point at which we were disappointed with the events it should really go to show you how high-quality the programming is at this convention.
Speaking of programming we held four panels which all went awesome. The Metrocon staff was amazing. Checking in before and after every panel making sure we had everything we needed. Though we were still surprised to find that they still had only one panel room with technology for projecting a laptop and it was a relatively small flat-panel TV, rather than upgrading to projectors on at least two rooms like most larger cons have. It was still nice to have and to have it working right. Better some technology that you’re sure works than technology which fails.
Overall, we can’t stress enough how much fun we had. This convention is really at the top of as good as conventions get. Every year we go we severely enjoy ourselves and we can’t wait to see it grow in the future.
If you can only make it to one convention in Florida I would put Metrocon right at the top of the list. Ample hotels in the surrounding area within walking distance makes it a great location. Plus the convention center can handle the size of the con with room to grow. There are TONS of stuff to do which will please everyone, a huge dealers room, massive artists alley (by comparison to most cons), and great guests. Just remember to eat, sleep, and drink lots of water (it’s free at the water fountains) to avoid collapsing from exhaustion due to the massive amounts of fun you will have.
Check out our Episode with convention coverage as well: Episode 88 (Right Click and “Save Target As” to Download)
Also don’t forget to enter our competition if you were in attendance at Metrocon.

The Addicts are more than pleased to announce that we will soon be interviewing Steve Blum in person at the Florida Anime Experience. Steve has agreed to sit down with us for a forty-minute interview.
Steve has lent his talents to more anime than we can count. Most well-known as the voice of Spike Spigel in Cowboy Bebop he’s also played: Rodger Smith in Big O, Eikichi Onizuka in Great Teacher Onizuka, Orochimaru in Naruto, Shishio in Rurouni Kenshin, Mugen in Samurai Champloo, and more!
He has also voiced dozens of characters in famous games such as Dragon Age:Origins, Call of Duty, and Metal Gear Solid. Steve is among the few who makes his full living as a voice actor.
If you’d like to submit questions for Steve let us know on Facebook, our Forums, or in the comments below.
Well, EXP Con has come and gone, and the Addicts had an awesome time.
EXP Con is now in its third year. For one weekend they take up the convention area space in the Renaissance World Golf Village. Golf and anime may not seem like the best fit (and judging by some of the other patron’s faces at the hotel they may agree) but the locale provided a beautiful setting for the con.
There were many places for cosplay photo shoots from lakes, pools, hallways, beautiful fountains, gardens and more that were fully taken advantage of by many con goers (including ourselves). The convention center was small but very nice. The size created a sense of intimacy among con goers.
The three panel rooms were organized to a T, which for a convention is no small feat. There have been far too many conventions where despite our best efforts getting AV equipment to the room (on time) seemed to be too much to ask. Each room was also a generous size which, again compared to other conventions, gave everyone in attendance a seat.
The kind people at the con set us up with a great table right in front of the registration area. Our table “neighbors” were 91.8 “The Fan.” A radio station with all-live DJs playing anime music all the time. The kind people at the fan were great people to sit next to and their music created an appropriate soundtrack for the con. You may want to check them out in the future, as the addicts may be taking over a podcast slot on Sundays on their station. To all the listeners who stopped by our table it was great to meet you. And to all prospective new listeners who we may have met it was great to meet you as well.
Main events at the con included (but of course not limited to) Miki’s singing competition, the AMV contest, masquerade ball, rave, autograph signing, and more. Each competition had a good show of entrants and the addicts made their contribution to the signing competition. (YouTube videos sure to follow)
EXP Con was definitely not the largest con which we have attended, however it had a surprising amount of charm to it. For anyone on the northern east coast of Florida who is an anime fan I’d highly recommend attending at least for the day.
Thanks again to the EXP Con organizers for setting up the A.A.A. Podcast with a table and tickets and treating us so well. We look forward to next year!
Pannels: The Hosts hosted three Pannels and the media from each can be found below.
Traveling to Japan – Hosted by Chiaki – Chiaki covered things you need to know, or at least a condensed list, before heading to Japan. You can download the powerpoint but the majority of the information was covered through Chiaki’s narriation, so if you have questions please e-mail Chiaki though the Contact form found under Contact.
Animes you’ve never seen (or heard of!) – Hosted by Mitsugi – A showing of animes that you’ve never seen, or heard of but that are some of the best out there. Due to the nature of this file being exceptionally large as a video file the animes shown were: Comedy, My Neighbors the Yamadas, On Your Mark, Future Boy Conan, and Le Maison en Petits Cubes.
The Girl’s Guide to Con-Going – Hosted by the Ladies of the A.A.A. – The ladies covered things girls need to know before going to a con, like what to pack, metting new people, dating and more. We recorded the pannel which can be found by clicking the following link, or right clicking and “save as” the file.
The A.A.A. Confessional: At the booth people could confess their anime sins and join the anime addict community. Among the many confessions were, and I… “I still love pokemon”, “I want InuYasha”, “Write fanfiction”, “Spent all my money on anime”, and “I get bad grades the week after a con and I’m watching all my anime.”
Scenes from the con: Even though there was a lot of time doing “work” at the convention between the booth and panels we still got around a bit.
The A.A.A. Hosts Cosplay: After a number of photoshoots and randomness the hosts fully documented their cosplay.
Florida SuperCon in my opinion is one of the top three conventions in Florida. Well organized, good venue, and a broad range of events only cover the tip of the iceberg of what this convention offers it’s loyal fans. From the 3000 brigade’s “Super Smash Bros” show (which is a don’t miss if you’re hitting up this convention) to the Hentai Deviant’s Cafe this con has it all.
One of the things I like about this convention is that it has an 18+ aspect to it. SO many conventions in Florida it seems like they don’t want to get their hands dirty and the older audience is left with nothing to do at the end of the day. Florida Supercon has 18+ panels and events, which if you are of this age-range it’s a GREAT thing to do while the younger group is busy at the rave (assuming you’re not interested in the rave yourself).
The con’s venue location is convenient, right next to a major highway. Though the building is a little run-down and tired it offers all the space you could want which is the important.
The hosts went to Supercon 2010 and set up a booth in the Dealers Room. Everyone met new people, listeners came to say hi, networked, hosted pannels and more! The weekend was a great success and a lot of fun for everyone. For those who came out to say hi, thanks! To those we met, welcome! To those we’ve yet to meet, maybe we’ll see you at Metrocon!
At Supercon 2010 the A.A.A. Networked with more voice actors and other special guests for future podcasts, so expect to hear more in the coming months!

The A.A.A. Hosts Cosplay: Of course, the A.A.A. Hosts cosplayed with the best of them.
The A.A.A. Confessional: At the booth people could confess their anime sins and join the anime addict community. Among the many confessions were, and I… “Am a Trap!”, “Cosplay girls as a man”, “Write fanfiction”, “Stayed up till 3 am instead of studying for an exam”, and “Proposed to my girlfriend at a con.”
