Chiaki’s stream of consciousness writing on Arppegio of Blue Steel – WARNING, spoilers
Starting in Episode 5, let me make a list of all the things I don’t give a damn about:
Episode 5
The 4 minutes spent on Haruna walking around in her lingere and then playing dress up
The 3 minutes spent on bathtime.
The important things in this episode could have been summarized into about 5 minutes – backstory on Makie and the Vibration warhead
Episode 6
So I don’t mind the arc with the little girl, or her backstory
Here’s what bugged me, this girl is suddenly weeping upset over creating the warhead that would kill the fog because of Haruna, a girl she’s known for like what 12 hours? That’s hardly enough time to be more than years of wanting dad’s approval
On the flip side, 12 hours of knowing the girl changed the fog warship girl from who knows how many years of killing to not killing anyone and being willing to like, die for the girl?
The trip and fall to alert the girl to the soldiers
Teddy Bears fighting, enough said
Not bad fightscenes in this episode, primarily the whole thing
The emotions in this episode felt completely forced, I did not believe the bond between Haruna or Makie in the slightest so the climax and whatnot didn’t feel realistic nor was I invested
Okay we got to see Iona be a bit of a badass, that was nice, even if it was like 3 seconds
The army guys were just sitting at a tent, just, chilling, at a tent. It’s in the middle of an assassination raid and they brought folding tables and a tent? Seems unpractical as hell.
At the end of this episode I can only think of one line: “Spike, I hate three things, kids, pets, and women. Why are all three neatly on my ship?!” (pets=talking stuffed animals)
Episode 7
Girl snuggling with a sharpie body pillow of a man who tried to blow her up in lingerie sleep wear in the first 3 minutes, talking about showing engines.
Girl popping from a robot to hump another girl.
Slamming your torpedoes into me joke in the first 6 minutes
The fact that this became a harem show. WTF, can’t we have a show that can have women in it and not turn them into a harem?
The fact that all we have accomplished in 10 minutes is girls fighting over girls, and boys, and reaching a base
Somehow, I’m starting to like a girl being a teddy bear over a girl, at least I don’t have to watch her trying to bang anyone in that form
Repairing scene with the girl moving the points of light was kind of a cool concept
“What is this sensation?” Iona says, haven’t they been together for like 2 years? Does Iona only realize she gives a damn about Gunzou when there’s a host of other chicks taking interest? GOD! Typical woman
AND 16 minutes in we are on a beach, F-THIS
I don’t care how important what you are saying is, how touching the music is, or how character relations are being developed. IF the shot has a bikini girl’s ass in the foreground, it doesn’t matter.
Episode 8
Glad they addressed a reason why all the mental models are girls. And that it was a rather clever reason – ships are always female.
Maya, just, annoying for the sake of being annoying
That teapot did not make six cups of tea, the little things, the little things!
In the middle of important plot points and discussion regarding the future of humanity and the world? Let’s have a BBQ!!
Episode 9
I get it, so far their big crux is about finding a world in which everyone can get along and be happy. But, they’ve spent so much time on trivial things and had the fog and humans work together so easily there’s a distinct lack of tension created. It doesn’t feel like an impossible notion, it feels like there’s one ship that doesn’t agree and everyone else is cool with it.
Oh and the magical girl ship transformations are getting old
I’m tired of ‘the power of love’ being used for everything
They’re having a super naval battle and just… chatting in the third dimension during?
Episode 10
you know what, just, eff it. Sister ship twins?
I’m already bored, knowing this series will end in a “lets all be friends” finale
Once more, Gunzou is hurt and I don’t really care. Despite him being the main character he’s had relatively minimal screen time and development.
Can I say, as an American, I feel odd about the whole “America is the savior, give our technology to America” vibe?”
I like the music, especially the theme they play when Gunzou is dying
I really wanted to be super emotional, but I just, couldn’t
Episode 11
Wait, so like, they struggled to take on 2 of the fog ships in the beginning, and now they’re just straight mowing them down in a single flipping shot? Nagara class ships super awful or something?
Oh yeah, they couldn’t actually kill anyone
AAAAAND muther trucking death star
Episode 12
Its like the death star and the eye of Sauron had a baby
I dont even know if we’re fighting under the ocean, on the ocean, or in space, this has gotten stupid

Reviewed by Mitsugi:
I was originally lured into watching this anime because it is directed by Chiaki Kon, the director of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, an anime I enjoyed quite a lot. I should have learned my lesson after watching Umineko no Naku Koro ni that Chiaki Kon is capable of being involved in some not quite so good anime.
The story centers around William Twining who is a wealthy and very intelligent noble, who attends a prestigious school. After William’s uncle goes bankrupt, William is unable to pay his school tuition. To avoid this catastrophe, William searches his house to find something of value to pay his school fees. What he finds is a gate that allows him to accidentally summon Dantalion, a demon, who identifies William immediately as the reincarnation of Solomon and the “elector” the man is able to announce a replacement ruler of hell the ruler of hell, Lucifer, has fallen into a slumber and the other high ranked demons of hell are seeking a replacement to rule over all of hell. Soloman was a powerful figure in hell in the past that had abused demons to conquer and rule over his nation. None of this is really very important to what happens in this anime.
Makai Ouji suffers, as much as any, from the anime “gloom”! (dum dum de dum!) What unfolds are two episodes of story setup, eight episode bishi romp, rife with man love, dumb comedy, and unbelievable and yet totally expected circumstances that are the embodiment of some genre of anime and two episodes of wrap up in which the selection for the ruler he hell is settled.
Things that occur in the middle section of this show:
One at a time, William learns that everybody he knows in his life is a demon (shocker!), even his family butler who has been with the family since William was born.
There are lots of “almost kiss” moments between Dantalion and William
Male demons that look like girls frolic around and beg to be named king of hell
Male demons all fighting over William for his affections
Really senseless school events such as festivals and boat races suck up screen time
Let’s get right down to what this show is really about: Boys love, bishi love. This show doesn’t even really do that well. For people who watch this show to see a romance blow up between two men, this won’t happen. There are moments in the show where Dantalion will say to William “Command me” or “I won’t ever leave your side” but this aspect of this show never really blooms and for this reason, I think fans the the show are asking for a second sesason to be made. Lord help me.
Where a second season to be made, the one benefit I would hope for would be a heavier emphasis on one part of the series that actually could be interesting, the war between Heaven and Hell. This is teased a lot but unfortunately it never really gets around to it. It would be nice to see this in a sequel were it to happen.

Review:
This anime is awful and pointless.

The Severing Crime Edge

Directed by Yuuji Yamaguchi (Angel Links, Strawberry Eggs, Fate/stay night)
Music by Yasuhara Takanashi (Gantz, Beelzebub, Fairy Tail)
The Severing Crime Edge, based on a manga by Tatsuhiko Hikagi, tells the story of Kiri Haimura, a young man with an insatiable desire to cut people’s hair. After his family had had enough of his weird hobby/obsession, he was lucky enough to stumble upon 14-year-old Iwai Mushanokouji. Iwai seems like a normal enough girl, until you learn that she is cursed with floor-length hair that can never be cut. Fortunately, Kiri’s flamboyant scissors are also cursed with the ability to cut anything. It’s a match made in heaven; that is, until psychopathic murderers start coming after poor, innocent Iwai. You see, Iwai is what’s called the “Hair Queen,” and anyone who can kill this helpless young teenager will have their heart’s deepest desire granted to them. The murderers are known as Authors, and their murder weapons are called Killing Goods. Lucky for Iwai, Kiri’s magic shears just so happen to be one of these famed murder weapons passed down to him from his ancestor Grayland, a man responsible for some 200 deaths. The scissors even have a name: The Severing Crime Edge. Can Kiri protect Iwai from these impending dangers?
This show is very much anime. I don’t mean that as a compliment, nor do I intend it as a criticism. This kind of show is every bit the reason I started watching anime in the first place. The story is wacky and all over the place but mature in tone. The characters are young, naive, and often emotionally and sexually stunted, but the nature of the show’s violence and subject matter suggests that it is for a much older audience than that which would relate to such character traits. As an adult, I’m not sure who this show is for, but as a young teenager, I could have sworn this kind of show was for me, but I better not show it to my parents.
That said, I can’t make heads or tails of the main relationship in this show, which, other than the action scenes is the only reason you’d watch something like this, I imagine. In a scene near the end of the season, Kiri confesses that he can’t take it anymore and straight up mounts Iwai. After licking her chest, nibbling her ears, and tasting her hair (?) he ultimately ends up kissing her on the forehead and says he can’t do any more than that. She swears that her lips will be waiting for him when he is ready. I am now confused. The scenes in which Kiri cuts Iwai’s hair are kind of amazing in all their visual embellishments. They feel like the only moments where these two characters are developing together, and they’re clearly more expensive than most of the rest of the show.
The animation quality is all over the place. Aside from run-of-the-mill still frames and your expected corner cutting, there are some weird inconsistencies between shots. The outlines are inexplicably thicker and more pronounced in some scenes, whereas they’re very thin and unnoticeable in others. Even colors can vary and change within a single scene. Aside from the hair cutting sequences, the action scenes stand out as some of what the show has to offer visually. The animations are fluid, and the blocking and movements are very coherent.
The show is chockablock with fan service. Besides your typical panty shot fare, there is a bit of nudity that was censored in the version I watched. All of the censored nudity comes from the flat-chested 14-year-old Iwai and an even younger character who appears late in the season. There is also a character who has huge bouncing breasts, but the shine drawn on the tops of her boobs are an unfortunate rosy red with solid white center, making her tits look like two giant pimples ready to explode. As an aside, this might be the first anime I’ve seen that uses the white censor bars to cover something other than nudity. There is a scene in which a character draws her own blood with a syringe and injects it into another character. In both moments where she inserts the needle, the white bar appears to cover it up.
Throughout the brunt of the season, I was pretty sure this show had nothing to say thematically. In the last couple of episodes, I may have found something interesting to latch onto. You see, the Authors, owners of the Killing Goods, are constantly being manipulated by their murder weapons. The disembodied voices of the tools’ original owners is constantly whispering in the Authors’ ears to kill and kill again. Therefore, the Authors must exploit Insteads, people that they can use their Killing Goods on in some way to sate their murderous desires. Iwai is Kiri’s Instead, and allowing him to cut her hair everyday eases his need to murder. The show establishes these original owners as more than just common criminals. They feel like legends and in that light are almost justified for their actions. So by the time a late season twist reveals that Crime Edge’s Original, Grayland, may not have been all he was cracked up to be (perhaps he randomly and ruthlessly killed two people instead of the reported 200), you really feel the guilt of these crimes starting to weigh down on Kiri. The quip that popped into my mind when all this came to light? The Sins of the Father. Or maybe I’m just reaching, because this show really is crap.
The show’s biggest crime is not the homicide, but the tedium and stupidity. Even the visually exciting action beats can be logically confounding. For example, an Author fighting Kiri uses a book of judgement to summon a noose around his victim’s neck. Kiri is hanging from this rope holding his scissors that can cut literally anything. What do? Cut rope? Nope! When there isn’t an action beat in progress, the characters are constantly dumping information about rules of this world that never end up mattering one iota. And the whole hair cutting thing just feels like an excuse to sell a wider variety of PVC figures with different cute haircuts.
I can see this being appealing to a young teenager, but it’s just not for me. I don’t think the show really has anything to say, despite accidentally stumbling upon some weighty themes. And ultimately, when a show doesn’t have anything to say, all it can do is entertain, and The Severing Crime Edge isn’t very good at that either.
1.5 breast pimples out of 5.
