Anime figures are cool, sometimes sexy, and always something you want to display on your shelf. If you’re looking at just getting into this world or want to know more about it we talk about the biggest figure companies out there to help you make an informed decision on what to buy.

 

 

  • Style and and personal preference

 

      • jointed vs non-joined
      • Chibi style versus realistic
      • Diaramas
      • ecchi versus character imitation

 

  • Some of the best companies to make figures
  • Alter

 

        • Extremely high quality and attention to detail
        • Figures are normally done to some life scale – usually ⅛
          • Height is usually between 7”-9” (aprox 18-22cm)
        • Some figures can be as cheap as $60, others as expensive as $260, most fall between $120-$160
        • Will often times come with the figure on some sort of decorative base, sitting on a bench, etc

 

  • GoodSmile Company

 

        • Nendoroid line
          • Soft and cute chibi style
          • Average price is between $40-$50 for a new figure
          • Often comes with multiple expressions and poses
            • Normally not jointed, pieces and parts that can be fit together
          • Usually no larger than 4in (10cm) tall
        • Non-nenroids are comparable to Alter figures in price, size, and scale

 

  • Max Factory

 

        • Figma line
          • Premium jointed figures
          • Typically Ranges from $40-70
          • Multiple faces and often times props
          • Figures usually measure between 5-6 inches tall (14cm)
        • Also will often create chibi character figures similar to the Nenroids of GoodSmile
        • Prices of figures range between $30-$100 depending on style, size, and quality
          • Normally praised for a good mixture of price and quality

 

  • Bandai

 

        • Unsurprisingly, Bandai makes a LOT of mecha figures.
          • Mech figures can range from $40-$150
        • They also make regular figures that are cheaper than their counterparts of GoodSmile, Max, or Alter
        • Bandai does a lot of the Gachapons

 

  • Kotobukiya

 

        • Really well known for their female sculpting even though some say they have issues with quality
        • Figures can range from $40-$100 on average

 

  • Griffon

 

        • They also have a chibi line called Nanorich
          • Measures around 4”
          • Will also come with optional faces
        • Their prices and scaling of figures is similar to GoodSmile, Max and Altier but they often are cited for having problems with sculpting and coloring on the finished products

 

  • Megahouse

 

      • Megahouse has also had some quality issues among fans, but some say they are improving
      • Is the male version of Kotobukiya (they do females, but their men are often praised for detail)
      • Prices are comparable

Summertime is here and we talk about some of our favorite beach episodes, or at least the ones we remember the best! What was your favorite summer inspired anime? Get in the mood for fun in the sun with the AAAPodcast!

Rosario + Vampire

  • Episode: 9
  • Summary: It’s summer vacation so where do the characters go? Why, to a beach of course! There are some other things involving a field of flowers and enemies and random battles but who is keeping track amid the pointless fanservice.
  • Good/bad? This episode falls under the “beach bad filler” category. There was nothing redeeming about this being set at a beach and it ended up taking away from the show due to its stupidity.

 

Tari Tari

  • Episode: 4
  • Summary: The girls of Tari Tari meet an old band of famous musicians on the beach. This inspires them to really get serious about singing in their choir club. Their spot is off the beach but they give a good performance for a small crowd.
  • Good/bad? Tari Tari does a great job all around of being a fantastic show and this episode does the same. It’s not full of fanservice and shows how anime can have an episode set at a beach, with bikinis even, that isn’t annoyingly full of fanservice and still progresses the overall plot.

 

Arpeggio of Blue Steel

  • Episode: 8
  • Summary: Surrounded by the enemy the cast of arpeggio of blue steel decides to discuss strategy and other important life deciding factors over a BBQ on the beach.
  • Good/bad? Is there anything about this show that’s good? No. The answer is NO. So it goes without saying that the beach episode is pointless and full of fanservice garbage.

 

Martian Successor Nadesco

  • Episode: 10
  • Summary: They’re sent to investigate a giant chulip on a tropical island. Beach time? Yep! Beach time. Of course Akito will run into the girl of his dreams but, there’s a reason this episode is titled “the problems with femininity”
  • Good/bad? It’s hard to say that there’s a “good” reason to have a beach episode in a show about mecha and space. Perhaps some felt this contributed to the series, but I think it was, in actuality, a general waste of an episode.

 

Gurren Lagann

  • Episode: 12
  • Summary: Dai-Gurren needs some repairs. But, don’t worry, it’s cool because it happened to need repairs just when we discovered a vast ocean to have a beach episode at! Some things are brewing, but everyone knows Yoko’s feeling uneasy about the attention another recent female addition, Nia, is getting.
  • Good/bad? Well, why put characters with DD boobs in an anime if you’re NOT going to put them in Bikinis? I mean, that makes it amazing, right?
