Hey there, nice vlog :). I think CG, like everything else, when done right is enjoyable in anime. Like you I don’t pretend to be an expert on how animation is done today, but I don’t think its hand drawn at all anymore at least not in terms of how is was in the 1990’s. I remember hearing somewhere that the coloring of scenes its all done by computer under the control of the animator. It seems like these days CG in a lot of series is a gimmick and just there for the hell of and not really necessary. An example of good CG in anime is Macross Zero, although the story kinda goes off the rails at the end. Bad CG isnt just in Japanese productions, have every seen Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles? it has some of the worst CG in all of anime.
Oh yeah, it’s definitely not only in Japanese productions. One of the most egregious of these is in Family Guy. They do it all the time and it looks so bad it’s ridiculous.
I was also working under the impression of what you said, that most 2D animation was done with the aide of computers anyway. I think I tried to transition my nomenclature from “hand-drawn” to “2D” in the video. I don’t really remember if I succeeded.
