We talk about 21 anime that failed to make money in Japan on this week’s Anime Addicts Anonymous podcast episode. This doesn’t mean these anime are bad, it means that they “failed” to turn a profit. And, some of the anime on this list may surprise you!

On November 11, famed Warner Entertainment Japan producer Kouhei Kawase (Prison School, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, SHIROBAKO) and sound director Yoshikazu Iwanami (F/SN UBW, Knights of Sidonia, Psycho-Pass) discussed the current state of affairs of the anime industry. These are some highlights of that discussion.
• Netflix and others are currently financing anime to draw in customers. The number of the anime will increase temporarily. But this is a short time boost and in the long term will decrease.
• From the current state, the number of anime will increase but there will be a bifurcation between contents for Japan and those with SciFi elements that will appeal to overseas viewers.
• There is a sense that this year was as turning point for anime funding. Business is moving away from physical media.
• Physical media did not sell well, but comics (manga) with OADs sold like crazy. There are many cases where this ended up in the black (profit).
• On the other hand, sales tied to event tickets have reached saturation.
• Face of production committees are changing. Investment from original creators (publishing companies) has increased recently. Even those deemed to be failures on the internet have shown profits.
• In the first place BD sales number is not the highest priority. Currently the evolving business model has entered a conversion period.
• The physical media business model was groundless, and has alienated the buying public. We must make the business model of the future
