Hey,
I’m currently enrolled in European Studies, have been a European Federalist for a couple decades now and recently dropped my carrier in IT to go to university to study Europe. So, in other words, I’m an otaku when it comes to Europe.
First I’d like to say that I really appreciate that you took the time to talk about Brexit. Then I’d like to say I was amazed at how accurate what you guys said was. I’m by no means a specialist about the E.U. (so…much…to…study…) but as far as I could tell only small, nitpicky, things were slightly incomplete.
A small clarification on immigration though: refugee come largely from war-thorn regions, cruel dictatorships (such as Eritrea) or other region where life is shit. “Economic” migrants come from poorer regions and constitute the bulk of the people coming to Europe. They do not have access to the same benefits as refugee do (depending on the country those benefits might be next to inexistent). Inside Europe’s single market there is free movement of labour meaning a European citizen could go work to Britain, but weren’t necessarily allowed to stay. Britain, much like Ireland, was never part of Schengen and thus didn’t have to let European citizen stay (this is a bit of an oversimplification). Finally it is important to note that many immigrants that went/go to the U.K. come from the Commonwealth (former British colonies and/or close partners).
Anyway, I really enjoyed listening to this (and all the other) AAA episodes! I hope you’ll keep going for 300 more. Cheers and hugs from Lisbon!
