Berserk is really a very gory story of revenge. All of the political background stuff is just for Griffith’s development and shows off how different the scope of vision between Griffith and Guts really are. Guts wants to kill Griffith so badly that he doesn’t care about anything else unless it helps him towards his goal.
With that said, I think the Golden Age arc skew what Berserk is that it could be a different anime for the most part. Expecting you would get more of the Golden Age will lead to disappointment. There are still political background stuff but it’s mostly Guts fighting the near-impossible odds against powerful demons.
