I don’t agree with allowing Amazon to consolidate all the streaming services. While I understood the idea that consolidation would save users money you don’t delve into the very real reality that the advantage of multiple streaming services is a greater diversity of anime coming to the streaming market. A look at Amazon’s choices the past two seasons tells it all. They’ve picked what their metrics tell them will be the most popular anime. But this leaves out a portion of anime that will find devoted if smaller fan bases as well as the “dark horses” that didn’t appear in the metrics. It also means, and all fans have experienced this, a highly anticipated anime ends up being a bomb but because Amazon only scooped up the “should be popular” anime the fandom misses out on the surprise gems.

Hey guys,
Just listened to your latest episode on anime strike and I felt like I had to make a comment since I’m currently grappling with the decision to sign up. Full disclosure, I’m a new prime student member and I only signed up because of the 6 month free promotion. I plan on unsubscribing once that period comes to an end.
I think the problem for me and a lot of other people is that if you are low income, this drastically hurts your anime watching, especially if they do gain a monopoly on the market. I can afford Netflix but Hulu I piggyback off of someone else’s subscription and chrunchyroll I only subscribe during hot seasons like fall. I can see many other people doing this, I know 3 people who pigggyback off of my Netflix to watch anime and 2 people who do the same to that Hulu script I’m in on. To pay for prime AND anime strike is a luxury that I cannot afford. And many other people feel the same. Even during promotional periods, most often prime is still too expensive and eventually those periods come to a close.
Amazon strike has already kept me from watching 3 shows exclusive to their service because I can’t afford to even pay the $5 monthly fee. If they offered free viewing with ads like chrunchyroll, that’d be a different story. So while the service might seem reasonable to a current prime member, I feel, that’s because you are already financially well off enough to pay for a service like prime. If they gain control of other anime, it will essentially force those of low income to pirate anime or quit watching it due to the financial barrier. And unlike a Netflix, Funimation, Chrunchyroll subscription, the barrier to get prime is far higher. I could subscribe to all those and then some and pay half of what prime is.
Food for thought. Thanks for your hard work!
Sincerely,
xlynne
